In India approximately 44.6 percent farmers have land holding and approximately 55.4 percent are landless labour (C.I.A World Dace Book, 2008). Most of the farmers or rural poor' income generation activity is based on small business. But the trends from last few years show that the production cost of agriculture produce is increasing and it is becoming difficult for the farmers to find out the new sources of income. The value addition of the produce is the solution to get higher profits from agriculture produce. This gives more value to the main producer as well as to consumers. Soyabean is one such crop which has a big margin after value addition.

This article is a case study that demonstrates the value addition of locally grown crops such as soyabean by transferring processing technology to the rural areas for establishing small enterprises organised and managed by women's cooperatives in the project villages of Uttarakhand.
